Overview

Hie Shrine (locally known as "Sanno-san") is the principal guardian shrine of Toyama City, with roots in the ancient Harihara district of Etchu Province. Following destruction by fire during the Nanboku-cho period (1335) and several relocations, the shrine settled at its present site under the patronage of Sasa Narimasa and later the Maeda clan in the 16th century. Its annual Sanno Festival, held each June 1–2, draws approximately 200,000 visitors and is the largest shrine festival in Toyama Prefecture.
