Overview

Oagata Shrine (大縣神社) in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, is the Ninomiya (second-ranked shrine) of ancient Owari Province, listed as a Myojin-taisha in the Engishiki (927 CE) and enshrining Oagata-no-Okami, the legendary ancestral deity of the Owari land. The shrine's kofun burial mound, located behind the main hall, is identified in shrine tradition with the divine ancestor whose spirit is venerated here. The current main hall, built in 1661 by Tokugawa Mitsutomo in the distinctive Oagata-zukuri architectural style, has been patronized by the Owari Tokugawa Domain for centuries. The shrine is widely known for its annual Hime-no-Miya Honen Matsuri in March, celebrating agricultural and human fertility.
