Overview

Toyama Prefectural Gokoku Shrine (Toyama-ken Gokoku Jinja) is a gokoku shrine enshrining 28,679 spirits of soldiers from Toyama Prefecture who gave their lives in service from the Meiji Restoration through World War II. Established in 1912 as the Toyama Prefectural Shokonsha, it was renamed to its current designation in 1939. On August 1, 1945, the main hall was completely destroyed in the devastating Toyama Air Raid, which burned 99% of the city. The divine spirits (mitamashiro) were safely preserved in an air raid shelter. A new hall was completed in 1954. The shrine grounds also contain the Isao-no-Shisha Shrine, which enshrines civilian victims of air raids and those who died on duty, reflecting a broader commemoration of all who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
