Shinmei Shrine in Fukui City, affectionately called "O-Shinmei-san" by locals, enshrines Amaterasu Omikami and traces its origin to 924 CE, when an imperial decree authorized the enshrinement of the Ise deities in the Asuwa imperial estate. The Azuma Kagami records that in 1192 Minamoto no Yoritomo granted territorial stewardship rights here, and the Edo shogunate later donated 100 koku of land.
