Overview
Sakurayama Hachimangu in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, is the principal shrine of the historic city of Takayama and the guardian deity of the townspeople. The shrine is famous as the home of the Takayama Autumn Festival (Takayama Matsuri), held each October, which is counted among Japan's Three Most Beautiful Festivals alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Chichibu's Yomatsuri. The festival's magnificent Karakuri (mechanical puppet) floats date from the Edo period and are designated Important Cultural Properties.
