Overview

Nyakuichioji Shrine in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, was established in the Kamakura period when local lord Nishina Morio made a pilgrimage to Kumano Nachi Shrine in Kii Province and invited the fifth-sanctuary deity — Nyakuichioji — to serve as the tutelary deity of the Nishina Estate. The shrine uniquely preserves traces of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism (shinbutsu-shugo), with a torii and Buddhist architecture coexisting on the grounds — a configuration locals protected from Meiji-era separation edicts. The Omachi Yabusame (mounted archery) held at the shrine each July is counted among Japan's three major yabusame traditions.
