Overview

Gifu Gokoku Shrine stands at the northern foot of Kinkazan — the hill crowned by Gifu Castle — enshrining approximately 37,800 spirits of those from the Gifu, Chuno, and Tono regions who died in national service from the Boshin War through World War II. Completed in November 1940, it was briefly renamed "Mino Goryo Shrine" during the Allied Occupation (1948–1953) before reverting to its original name. The shrine grounds are celebrated as one of the city's finest cherry blossom sites, and received an imperial visit in 1962.
