Fukashi Shrine in Matsumoto City was founded in 1339 by Ogasawara Sadamune, who enshrined the Suwa deity (Takeminakata-no-Mikoto) in gratitude for military victories. In 1402 the Ogasawara clan added worship of Sugawara no Michizane (Tenman Tenjin) from Kitano Tenmangu, creating the dual-deity configuration that defines the shrine today. When Matsumoto Castle was constructed in 1504, Fukashi Shrine became its tutelary shrine, cementing its role as the spiritual guardian of the castle town and the patron deity of scholarship and martial arts for generations of Matsumoto residents.
