Mount Haguro is the gateway to the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage, accessible year-round unlike the snow-bound Gassan and secret Yudono. The 2,446-stone-step approach through ancient cedar forest is one of Japan's most atmospheric pilgrimage paths.
