Uesugi Shrine deifies one of Japan's most celebrated samurai, Uesugi Kenshin, the 'Dragon of Echigo' known for his military brilliance and Buddhist devotion. Located on the former grounds of Yonezawa Castle, the shrine is surrounded by a moat and cherry trees.

Kenshin was a devout Buddhist who believed himself to be an avatar of Bishamonten and often went into battle carrying a flag inscribed with the character for 'dragon.'
