Toyokuni Shrine enshrines Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the peasant-born warrior who unified Japan. Originally grand in scale, it was destroyed by the Tokugawa shogunate but restored during the Meiji era. The karamon gate, a National Treasure, is believed to have come from Fushimi Castle.
