Ubusunagami (Birth-Place Deity)

産土神 (うぶすながみ)

The kami of the land where a person was born, offering lifelong protection

Ubusunagami is the kami of the specific place where a person is born. Unlike the ujigami, which changes if a person moves to a new area, the ubusunagami remains constant throughout one's life — it is the deity of your birthplace, regardless of where you later reside. The relationship between a person and their ubusunagami is considered a permanent, unbreakable bond.

The concept reflects the Shinto understanding that each piece of land has its own kami, and that being born on that land creates a spiritual connection that transcends physical distance. A person's first shrine visit after birth (miyamairi) is ideally made to the ubusunagami shrine, introducing the newborn to the deity of the land where they entered the world.

In practice, the terms ujigami and ubusunagami are often conflated in modern usage, as many people are born and raised in the same area. The distinction becomes meaningful when someone is born in one place but grows up in another — in such cases, they technically have both an ubusunagami (birthplace deity) and an ujigami (current residence deity).
