Shinmon (Sacred Gate)

神門 (しんもん)

A gate at a shrine marking the entrance to the innermost sacred area

A shinmon is a gate that marks the boundary of the innermost sacred precincts of a Shinto shrine. While a torii provides a symbolic threshold and a romon creates an imposing entrance, the shinmon serves as the final gate before the worship area containing the haiden and honden.

Shinmon can take various architectural forms — some are simple single-story structures, while others are more elaborate. They are often the gate that encloses the tamagaki (sacred fence) surrounding the most sacred buildings. At Ise Jingu, multiple layers of gates and fences control access to the innermost sanctuary, with each layer marking an increase in sanctity.

The term shinmon literally means 'god gate' or 'divine gate,' reflecting its role as the ultimate threshold between the human and divine realms within the shrine complex.
